Ronal, a former Army Bomb Specialist, faced significant challenges after his military service. Transitioning to civilian life was tough due to injuries sustained in service, including a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and nerve damage in his left leg. These physical limitations, coupled with a struggle to adapt to civilian work environments, led him into a difficult phase. Ronal spent most of his career as a delivery driver, assisting in a woodshop, and managing supply orders.
Ronal grappled with drug dependency, which had started as a coping mechanism during his service. His situation reached a low point when he found himself homeless and under the guardianship of a military fiduciary due to his financial instability, addictions, and precarious mental health.
Hope came knocking when a friend referred him to Volunteers of America Florida (VOAF). Here, Ronal found not just a safe place to stay but a supportive community that understood his unique struggles as a veteran. He used this opportunity to clear his mind and heal.
Through the support at VOAF, and his renewed faith, Ronal embraced sobriety and began regular participation in church and Bible studies. His commitment to recovery is shown by his recent achievement: one year of sobriety.
On the path to independence, Ronal is determined to regain control of his finances. He recently sent a request to have his fiduciary appointment lifted, a key milestone in his recovery. Although his limited income still presents daily challenges, including managing essentials like food and phone bills, rent assistance from the Bob Woodruff Foundation has been a crucial lifeline as he waits for his appeal to be processed.
With the promise of his fiduciary status being lifted, Ronal envisions a future where he can fully manage his finances and navigate life on his terms. With renewed faith, sobriety, and a growing sense of self-reliance, he is determined to build a meaningful life, balancing his needs and aspirations.
